The Prime Minister noted that Khan's unparalleled talent and dedication to music enriched our cultural world, inspiring generations. "His passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill. My heartfelt condolences to his family, disciples, and countless admirers," he added.
Khan, who had been fighting cancer, passed away on Tuesday afternoon in a private hospital in Kolkata at the age of 55. He is scheduled to be laid to rest with state honors in the city on Wednesday.
The musician's health deteriorated after suffering a cerebral attack last month. Initially seeking treatment at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, the 55-year-old from the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana later chose to exclusively continue his treatment in Kolkata.
Hailing from Badayun in Uttar Pradesh, Rashid Khan, also the nephew of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, began his musical journey with training from his maternal grand-uncle, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan (1909–1993).
His musical aptitude was initially acknowledged by his uncle, Ghulam Mustafa Khan, who offered initial training in Mumbai. However, the primary and foundational training was undertaken under the guidance of Nissar Hussain Khan, initially at his residence in Badayun.
At the age of eleven, Rashid Khan performed his debut concert. In the following year, 1978, he graced the stage at an ITC concert in Delhi. Subsequently, in April 1980, when Nissar Hussain Khan moved to the ITC Sangeet Research Academy (SRA) in Calcutta, Rashid Khan, at the age of 14, also became a part of the academy.
Rashid Khan explored the fusion of classical Hindustani music with lighter musical genres and embarked on experimental collaborations, including concerts with Western instrumentalist Louis Banks. Additionally, he showcased his versatility by participating in jugalbandis, sharing the stage with sitarist Shahid Parvez and other musicians.
